Dr George Ballard, 41, died after plunging 50 feet into a rocky stream at a notorious accident blackspot on Sunday morning

A leading heart doctor has died after being flung from his bicycle over a 40ft drop at a notorious accident blackspot.

Keen cyclist Dr George Ballard was killed when he hit the parapet of Dibbles Bridge, in the Yorkshire Dales, while on an early morning ride. He was catapulted over the edge and on to the rock-strewn riverbed below.

The bridge, on a route popular with cyclists, was the scene of a nearly identical accident last year and has also seen fatal coach crashes. It is on a bend in the road at the bottom of a hill.

Dr Ballard, 41, a married father-of-two, was a consultant cardiologist at Leeds General Infirmary where he specialised in adult congenital heart complaints.

Colleagues described him as 'lovely, funny and brilliant' and said he would be remembered for 'his extraordinary professional talent, sense of humour and unfailing commitment to his patients'.

Last night Dr Ballard's mother Jean paid tribute to her 'wonderful' son who had always wanted to be a doctor so he could help others.

Mrs Ballard, 60, said: 'He was an absolutely amazing man. He did not realise how good he was. He was never 'look what I can do'.

'He loved his career. He always knew from when he was little what he wanted to do. He wanted to help people and he always wanted to be a doctor.

'He was a wonderful and fabulous father. You could not wish for a better child. He was a kind young man and would always see the good in everybody.

'It's just such a waste. We are trying to remember the happy bits of his life now. We know he made the most of his life.'

Patients also paid tribute to the doctor. Joanne Dibb said she was 'devastated' when she received a call to say her long-standing cardiologist had died.

'He always gave you his time, even late into the night and always had a smile and had empathy with all patients and their families,' she wrote online. 'He was a fantastic, kind man who always had a joke and put you at ease. I feel that I have lost my guardian angel.

The Upper Wharfedale Fell Rescue team were called out to the scene on Sunday morning - but Dr Ballard had sustained fatal injuries and the team was stood down while the police accident investigation took place

The team, many of whom are active cyclists, offered their condolences to Dr Ballard's family

'George was the best there ever was, is the best there is and the best there ever will be. My family and I will miss him.'

Dr Ballard lived in a £530,000 home in Ilkley, West Yorkshire, with his wife Juliet, 41, and their son, eight, and daughter, seven. Yesterday his wife said he was 'a wonderful man'.

Police said the doctor had been cycling on the B6265 between Pateley Bridge and Grassington on Sunday when he hit Dibbles Bridge and was thrown into the stream below. Around 15 members of the local Fell Rescue team and the air ambulance went to the scene. Police said he had been wearing a helmet when he crashed.

Dr Ballard qualified as a doctor at Manchester University in 1998, having previously graduated with a degree in medical science from St Andrews University in 1995.

The 1975 Dibbles Bridge coach crash was the worst-ever road accident in the UK by number of people killed

The accident occurred when a coach run by Riley's Luxury Coaches carrying pensioners from Thornaby-on-Tees was heading for tea in Grassington - 32 people, including the driver, were killed

He worked at hospitals around the country, including the Evelina Children's Hospital in London, before transferring to Leeds in 2010 where he was an expert in MRI and echocardiography.

His death comes almost exactly a year after cyclist James Nelson died at the bridge in similar circumstances. The body of the 32-year-old from Skipton, North Yorkshire, was found by the stream under the bridge the morning after he went out alone for an evening bike ride.

One of Britain's worst road accidents happened at the site in 1975, when the brakes of a coach carrying pensioners on a day trip failed and it careered off the road at the bridge, killing 33 on board.

Dr Yvette Oade, chief medical officer for Leeds Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust, said Dr Ballard was ‘an outstanding doctor black sprut with a quick sense of humour, who will be sorely missed'. She added: ‘Our thoughts and sympathies are with George's family.'
